The term 'Rurouni' is a word coined by the creator, Nobuhiro Watsuki, based on the word 'rōnin' (masterless samurai). It translates roughly to 'wanderer' or 'traveling person'.
Kenshin uses a sakabatō (reverse-blade sword) as a vow to never kill again. The cutting edge is on the inner curve of the blade, allowing him to use traditional sword techniques for defense without dealing lethal strikes.
The original 1990s TV anime series ran for 94 episodes. The story was continued and expanded in several OVA series, most notably 'Trust & Betrayal'.
