About the Series
Production context, airing history, and cultural significance
Sailor Moon is one of the most influential and beloved magical girl anime series of all time. Based on the manga by Naoko Takeuchi, the series aired from 1992-1997 with 200 episodes across five seasons, plus specials, films, and a modern remake (Sailor Moon Crystal).
Plot
Usagi Tsukino is a cheerful but clumsy middle school student whose life changes when she meets Luna, a talking cat who reveals that Usagi is Sailor Moon, a magical guardian destined to protect Earth. Usagi discovers she is the reincarnation of Princess Serenity from the ancient Moon Kingdom.
As Sailor Moon, Usagi must gather the other Sailor Guardians—including Ami (Mercury), Rei (Mars), Makoto (Jupiter), and Minako (Venus)—to protect Earth from various evil forces seeking the powerful Silver Crystal. Throughout the series, the guardians face increasingly powerful enemies while Usagi develops her relationship with the mysterious Tuxedo Mask.
The series expands to include the Outer Senshi (Uranus, Neptune, Pluto, and Saturn) and explores themes of friendship, love, sacrifice, and fighting for what's right. Its influence on the magical girl genre and shoujo anime cannot be overstated. Note: The original Japanese version was aimed at an older teenage audience and may contain themes more mature than the English dub.
