Interestingly, these characteristics might seem better suited to Sailor Pluto (Setsuna), the guardian of time. Conversely, Setsuna's sign (Scorpio) is associated with transformation and death—traits that align more closely with Hotaru's destructive power. It's an intriguing astrological crossover between these two mysterious Outer Senshi!
The planet Saturn is named after the Roman god Saturn, the deity of old age, time, and agriculture. In Roman mythology, Saturn was often depicted carrying a sickle or scythe—symbolism that carries through in multiple ways.
As with her astrological sign, these time-based associations seem better aligned with Setsuna, who literally has power over time. However, in Eastern mythology, Saturn took on a different meaning: it was associated with death and endings. This Eastern interpretation was clearly followed in Sailor Moon, as Hotaru wields the legendary Silence Glaive—a weapon remarkably similar to the sickle of the god Saturn—and has the power to bring about destruction and rebirth.
Unlike some Senshi whose names directly reference their attacks, Hotaru's translations are more subtle. She is the Sailor Guardian of Saturn, called "Dosei" (土星) in Japanese, which means "Earth Star" or "Soil Star." This connects to her earth sign status and represents the planet's elemental nature.
Her full name, Hotaru Tomoe (土萠 ほたる), translates to "earth firefly"—a hauntingly beautiful name that evokes her delicate nature and the brief, flickering light of a firefly in the darkness.
